The quiet and quaint city of Abita Springs sits almost in the middle of St. Tammany Parish. It is located at 30.478N latitude and -90.037W longitude and has an elevation of 30 feet above sea level. Abita Springs began as a Choctaw Indian village over 2000 years ago that took its name from the free flowing spring located in the center of town that many thought to be medicinal. The name Abita Springs itself is considered a redundancy, being that Abita is the Choctaw word for “spring”, essentially it’s like saying Spring Springs.
The population of Abita Springs comes in at a miniscule 2,480 people. Covering an area of only 4.48 square miles, this put the population density at 554.07 people per sq mile. The average age of its residents is 35.64 years old, with the average household income being $46,324. The average listing price for houses in this area is $154,843.
For being a small town, Abita does hold it’s own on notoriety. The world famous Abita Brewing Company was formed in 1986 in Abita. Some say it’s use of the artesian water from the springs of Abita give the beer a taste all it’s own.
The UCM (you see ‘em) museum, also know as the Abita Mystery House, also calls Abita home. The museum is a roadside tourist attraction that houses thousands of odd and eccentric pieces that folk artist John Preble has amassed. The Abita Mystery House contains items that can be seen nowhere else in the entire world and should be viewed by all at least once.
The Abita Opry is a non-profit organization based in Abita Springs. They give six concerts per year with the sole mission to “the preservation and presentation of Louisiana roots music”
Abita Springs has two schools in its town. Abita Springs Elementary School is a public school, teaching grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Abita Springs Middle School is also a public school, picking up after the elementary school, teaching grades fourth through sixth.
